I have major disdain for the Florida Trail Association. Before I get into all of those reasons here are the two times membership is helpful:

Private Lands- Randy Madison's Shelter and Hunting Clubs The FTA has negotiated passage through here for members only. Sure you could just say you're a member if anyone asks…but no one ever did.
