I was hiking along just below a ridge when I heard a rustling in the woods ahead and to my right. It was just before dark and I looked up just in time to see a 500 pound black bear run up the ridge and into the brush.
This was the first time I've ever encountered a bear in the wild...it was awesome! I suppose it would have been less awesome if the bear was charging towards me and not running away, but that wasn't the case.
This story didn't exactly make people at the shelter comfortable, since my sighting was less than a mile from camp, but it was definitely the highlight of my trip...at least as cool as the panther I saw in Florida.
